Base explores the native token, unveils the Solana bridge at Basecamp 2025

Coinbase’s Layer-2 network base can soon launch a native token, said creator Jesse Pollak during the Basecamp event.

According to Base, the new token could support decentralization and extend opportunities for manufacturers and creators. “We are in the first phases of our exploration and we have no details to share around the calendar, design or governance,” said the network on Monday.

The base is a layer 2 blockchain built on Ethereum and incubated by Coinbase. It allows the treatment of transactions outside the chain before adjusting them to Ethereum.

Launched in 2023, the network has become the most used Ethereum Layerum Layerum Blockchain, the token terminal data showing approximately 20.8 million monthly active addresses in the last twelve months.

Speaking during the Basecamp event, Pollack also announced the launch of an open-source bridge to Solana, allowing users to move assets between the two channels and allow developers to draw from a wider liquidity pool.

Pollack said the base was designed to be an “bridge, not an island”, adding that the objective is to strengthen the entire ecosystem by opening it and interoperable. “For a better global economy, we need it to be interoperable and connected.”

This is a history in development, and additional information will be added as it will be available.
